1678 Volume Conservation

Rebacking with raised bands

This volume dating from 1678 was in very poor condition, the boards were detached and the leather was extremely dry with general deterioration, so retaining as much of the original materials was a real challenge. After creating a new spine with raised bands the spine was tooled in a fashion that reflects the time period the book was originally bound.

The leather on this old binding was very dry but we managed to save the front and back boards and rebacked the volume using calf. Raised bands were created and gold lettering added.
